Avoid Extra Pounds This Holiday Season

The holidays are upon us, and it’s quite easy to pack on unwanted pounds. Dentists in Portland, Oregon Dr. Todd Beck and Dr. Jacob Morrow offer these tips to keep your smile healthy and avoid those potential extra pounds this holiday season.

Moderate Sugar Intake

Sugar is literally everywhere you look during the month of December. It’s important to keep track of sugar intake because it not only adds to your overall calories each day, but it can lead to tooth decay and other potential dental problems in the future. Bacteria love to feed on sugar, which leads to a build-up of plaque on the surfaces and in the grooves of teeth.

Be careful not to indulge too much during the holiday season. Eat healthy meals full of protein and vegetables in order to balance out the treats during these days and evenings of celebration! Cap off the treats with regular brushing and flossing to get rid of any plaque that might stick around.

Pace Yourself

This good advice is great when it comes to holiday parties, which attack our senses with sights, smells and tastes not found during other times of the year. Remember to take advantage of the holiday season to really focus on the food and drink that you don’t get to enjoy just any time. At the same time, remember that egg nog will be served not only at the present Christmas party, but also in a few days at the next gathering. Pace yourself in order to keep balanced and avoid overindulging in holiday treats.

Sleep Well

It’s important to prioritize sleep, especially during the holiday season. Feeling overtired leads to overeating due to a desire to feel better.

Instead of turning to holiday treats to boost your mood, try to keep a strict regimen for heading to bed each night to keep stress levels and weight gain at a minimum. After brushing and flossing, practice stretching and then read a book in minimal light in order to get your body and brain slowed down for a good night’s sleep.

Focus on Feeling Good

If you start feeling lethargic and generally unhappy during these dreary, stress-filled days, take some time out for yourself to restore balance and just feel good again. Take a day or two to stay away from sugar, get a good night’s sleep, exercise, have some down time, and take a break from the hustle and bustle of the season.
